How to Prep Your Homestead for Winter
As summer fades and fall rolls in, it’s time to start thinking about prepping your home for the cooler months. Why pay someone else when you can take control and handle it yourself? A little DIY work now can save you a ton of hassle—and cash—later.
- Clean your gutters. Clear out the leaves and debris so they don’t clog up and cause water damage. It’s a simple task that makes a big difference when those fall rains hit.Â
- Check your roof. While you're cleaning your gutters, give your roof a once-over. Check for any missing shingles or signs of wear. A minor patch-up now is way cheaper than a major repair down the line.
- Seal up air leaks. Next, seal up any air leaks around your windows and doors. Drafts might seem harmless, but they can suck the warmth right out of your home—and your wallet. A little caulk and weatherstripping go a long way in keeping the cold air out.
- Don’t forget to check your outdoor faucets and hoses. Drain and disconnect them to prevent freezing and bursting pipes. A few minutes of effort can save you from a winter plumbing nightmare.
- Service your fireplace. If you’ve got a fireplace, now’s the time to have it serviced. A clean, efficient fireplace is not only cozier but also safer.Â
- Clean your furnace/boiler. What you do for your fireplace, you’ll also want to do the same for your furnace or boiler. Give it a good cleaning and make sure it’s in top shape to keep you warm all season long.
- Clean & service your lawn equipment. Clean and service your mower, trimmer, and any other tools you’ll be storing away for the winter. Come spring, you’ll be ready to hit the ground running—or mowing.
Taking care of these tasks yourself isn’t just practical; it’s about being self-reliant. So, roll up your sleeves, and get your home ready for fall and winter!
